2024 Summer Camp: Overwhelmed-Overflowing

Greater Camp Theme Overview

For many coaches and athletes, feelings of uncertainty, confusion, loss, and disappointment can seem like an undeniable reality. However, the truth is that our identity in Christ is greater than our identity in sports. It’s our confidence in Christ that wipes away any uncertainty of this world.

Much like we pursue our goals in sports, God does the same with us. He pursues us. He loves us and accepts us as we are. Success is no longer defined by our skills. With Him, we can leave the pressure of performance behind. With Him, we’re already a winner. His sacrifice for us gives us significance. We have a new purpose when we play. We can pursue the mission He has paved for us: a relationship with Him.
“Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.”
(1 Timothy 6:11)

POTENTIAL

There is greater potential in your life than finding your identity in sports. As an athlete, it’s natural to feel like you have more potential than what is showing up in practice or in the heat of competition. And when you don’t feel like you’re living up to expectations, the pressure starts to build.

Living up to your potential is more than what you can do on your own. There’s more to life than playing for the scoreboard. In fact, your potential shouldn’t just be measured by athletic achievements. It should be measured by who God says you are. There is a greater purpose wrapped up in your potential when your potential is wrapped up in Him.

Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”

-John 8:12

PROMISE

You’re seeing glimpses of what you can be as an athlete and it’s exciting to experience competitive growth. But is it just about improving, achieving, and winning? If so, that feeling of excitement might not last for long. The great news is that God created you for something more.

More than anything you can find through athletic success, God wants to give you the greater promise that comes from Jesus.

For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

-John 3:16

PERFORMANCE

Performance counts. It isn’t a bad thing, but an unhealthy point of view as a competitor can produce bad habits, wrong motivations and unnecessary pressures. The good news is that your identity in Christ gives you a new way to perform.

Understanding that God is the only person they truly need to please can certainly bring peace, joy and freedom from fear. You are playing for Someone, not something.

I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me. -John 15:5

PURPOSE

When things aren’t going as planned, it might be hard to stay motivated to push through it all. But when you compete for God, you can be confident that you are playing and living for a far greater purpose.

Jesus also wants to redefine what success and winning are all about. Life’s greater purpose has much more to do with God and others than what you can accomplish on your own. It's less about what you do, and more about who God says you are. Live from that place of truth!

As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.

-John 17:18
